August 11th – 12th: 2010 University Film and Video Conference, Burlington, VT – TOTBO Workshops by Jon Reiss Wednesday, 3:30-5:15PM. Thursday, 10:30AM-12:15PM. I will be appearing at the University Film and Video Conference which is being held at Champlain College in Burlington VT. Both presentations will center around the core Think Outside the Box Office (TOTBO) principles with an emphasis on how and why to teach this material to film students. I have a solo presentation on Wednesday afternoon and am on a panel with Linda Brown Dave Grotell and Andy Opel on Wednesday. I will focus on how the distribution and marketing landscape has shifted and that film schools must teach their students how to connect to audience: Teaching only how to make films is no longer enough. In addition I will focus on how filmmakers need to become more entrepeneurial, focus on career as opposed to project development and finally – of course – the creation of a new crew position – the Producer of Marketing and Distribution – and that we need to teach how to be a PMD in film school (and business schools) and what that curriculum might look like. http://www.ufva.org/

For anybody making films in WA – whether underground moviemakers or people looking for the next Australian hit – this workshop offers the opportunity to the current state of the global industry. As well as many other credits. The subjects of Jon Reiss’ work sit on the outside of mainstream culture and so it’s unsurprising that the way in which his films hit the marketplace explored alternate mechanisms. With two massive international film festival favorites behind him, Jon has harnessed the alternative spirit to develop unique approaches to reaching audiences and commercial success on his own terms. Join Jon as he takes us through hybrid distribution and marketing techniques, covering topics such as how to create a distribution and marketing strategy that is unique for your film, the various markets that are available to release your film in, how and why to engage your audience as early as possible, and how to think beyond the feature film to create new forms of content to market and distribute. Areas discussed include rights and digital rights, redefining the theatrical experience and transmedia.
